Human history is the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.
C.S. Lewis
Last Sunday, our pastor discussed the different ways that God constantly pursues each one of us: hardship, preaching, admiration, signs, and letdown.
When discussing letdown, our pastor showed a clip from a “60 Minutes” interview with Tom Brady in 2005 when he was just 27, having just won his third Super Bowl earlier that year.
We have all experienced letdowns to some degree in our lives.
Over the years, I struggled with thinking that once we landed a certain high-profile customer, it would mean that we had finally “made” it as a company, that I had “made” it. But the thrill of that new customer was always fleeting.
Does it mean we let up and coast, knowing this worldly success will never be enough? No, I don’t think that’s the solution.
When I feel this frustration of letdown now, I use it as a reminder to check what I’m chasing and why. I go to God and ask for guidance. And I usually find that I have drifted off track and need to re-align with living for God’s glory - His will, not mine.
I double down in looking for signs and admirable people to model my behavior after. I read the Bible and seek more great sources of preaching and inspirational material to draw myself closer.
And I thank God that He mercifully chose to use letdown this time instead of His most effective tool - hardship.
